What is Google Ads Quality Score and how do I improve it?

Google Ads Quality Score is Google’s rating of the quality and relevance of your keywords, ads, and landing pages. It’s a diagnostic tool that gives you a score from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest) for each keyword in your account. At sagum, we treat Quality Score as a critical lever for profitability-a higher score means you pay less per click and earn better ad positions, while a lower score drives up costs and hurts performance.

What Makes Up Quality Score?

Quality Score is built on three core components, each of which Google evaluates at the time of search:

  • Expected Click-Through Rate (CTR): How likely someone is to click your ad when it shows for a given keyword. This is based on historical performance and ad relevance.
  • Ad Relevance: How closely your ad copy matches the intent behind the user’s search query. If your keyword is “running shoes,” your ad should talk about running shoes-not hiking boots.
  • Landing Page Experience: How relevant, useful, and easy to navigate your landing page is for the keyword. Think load speed, mobile friendliness, and clear calls to action.

Each component is rated as “Below average,” “Average,” or “Above average.” A strong combination across all three drives a high Quality Score.

Why Quality Score Matters

Improving your Quality Score directly lowers your Cost Per Click (CPC) and improves your Ad Rank. With a higher Ad Rank, you can outrank competitors even with a lower bid. This means more clicks, more conversions, and a better return on ad spend. As an agency that builds data-first environments for our clients, we always monitor Quality Score because it reveals inefficiencies that eat away at budget.

How to Improve Quality Score

1. Tighten Keyword-Theme Alignment

Organize your campaigns into tightly themed Ad Groups with just a handful of closely related keywords. For example, don’t lump “organic coffee” and “coffee mugs” in the same group-each needs its own set of ads and landing pages. This boosts Ad Relevance because your ad can speak directly to the search intent.

2. Write Highly Relevant Ad Copy

Your ad headlines and descriptions must echo the user’s search query. Include the keyword in the headline at least once, and make sure the offer matches. Use clear, action-oriented language like “Buy,” “Get,” or “Shop.” Avoid generic fluff-test multiple ad variations and pause underperformers.

3. Optimize the Landing Page

Your landing page should deliver exactly what the ad promises. If your ad says “25% Off Running Shoes,” the page must show that offer immediately. Key optimization levers include:

  • Fast load time (under 3 seconds on mobile)
  • Mobile-responsive design
  • Clear, prominent call-to-action
  • Relevant content that matches keyword intent (no generic homepage)

Google evaluates this with real user signals, so a good experience earns a higher Landing Page Experience rating.

4. Use Negative Keywords Aggressively

Regularly review Search Terms Reports and add irrelevant queries as negative keywords. This prevents your ads from showing for searches that don’t convert, which protects your CTR and relevance over time. At sagum, we build negative keyword lists as part of every campaign’s 30-60-90 day plan to maintain data quality.

5. Leverage Ad Extensions

Extensions like Sitelinks, Callouts, Structured Snippets, and Call Extensions increase your ad’s real estate and provide more utility to users. Google rewards this with a higher expected CTR, which positively impacts Quality Score. They also give users more reasons to click without increasing your bid.

6. Monitor and Refine Your Ad Schedule

Analyze performance by time of day and day of week. Reduce bids or pause underperforming time slots to prevent wasteful impressions that can drag down your CTR. Over time, refining your schedule improves the data quality associated with each keyword.

7. Test and Iterate Continuously

Quality Score is not static. We recommend running A/B tests on ad copy, landing pages, and keyword match types every month. A lean, testing-driven approach-like the one we use for all clients-helps uncover winning patterns that boost scores consistently. Track score changes in your BI dashboard to see what moves the needle.

At the core, improving Quality Score is about empathy for the searcher. When you make every click feel perfectly matched to the user’s intent, Google rewards you with lower costs and better positions. That’s the kind of alignment we build into every client strategy at sagum-because it drives real business growth, not just vanity metrics.
