How do I use TikTok’s Lookalike Audiences to find new customers?

TikTok’s Lookalike Audiences are one of the most powerful tools for scaling your customer base, but to use them effectively, you need to understand both the mechanics and the strategic nuance. At its core, a Lookalike Audience takes the characteristics of your best existing customers-their behaviors, interests, and demographics-and finds new people on TikTok who share those same traits. This isn’t magic; it’s data science applied to ad targeting. Here’s how to do it right, based on what we’ve learned from spending over $2 million on TikTok ads.

Step 1: Build a High-Quality Source Audience

The foundation of any effective Lookalike Audience is the source-the group of users you ask TikTok to model the new audience after. Garbage in, garbage out applies here. Your source must be both relevant and large enough to generate a statistically valid model (ideally at least 1,000 users, but 5,000+ is far better).

What to Use as a Source

  • Customer Lists (First-Party Data): This is your most valuable asset. Upload a list of emails, phone numbers, or device IDs from your highest-value customers-people who have purchased multiple times, have high lifetime value, or fit your ideal buyer profile.
  • Website or App Events: Use TikTok’s Pixel or Events API to create a source audience based on users who completed key actions, like making a purchase, adding an item to cart, or spending more than 30 seconds on your site. These signals indicate high purchase intent.
  • Video Engagement: If you’re early-stage and lack sales data, you can build a source from people who watched a significant portion of your best-performing organic or paid videos. This is weaker than purchase data but still better than a blank slate.

Step 2: Select the Right Lookalike Size

When you create a Lookalike Audience in TikTok Ads Manager, you’ll be asked to choose a percentage-from 1% to 10% of the country’s total TikTok user base. This is a critical decision.

  • 1% – 3% (Narrow): These audiences are the closest match to your source. Use them when you have a very strong, high-intent source (e.g., frequent purchasers). They will be smaller but far more targeted-ideal for bottom-of-funnel campaigns focused on conversion.
  • 4% – 6% (Balanced): This is the sweet spot for most businesses. It offers a good mix of similarity and scale, working well for prospecting campaigns where you want new customers but still need reasonable relevance.
  • 7% – 10% (Broad): These audiences include many users who are only loosely similar to your source. Use them for top-of-funnel awareness or when your source is very niche and you need more volume. Be careful-they can dilute performance.

Step 3: Layer Lookalikes With Other Targeting

A common mistake is to think a Lookalike Audience alone is enough. It’s not. TikTok’s algorithm performs better when given clear guardrails. Always layer your Lookalikes with additional targeting to guide the system:

  • Interest & Behavior Targeting: Combine your Lookalike with interests related to your product category. For example, if you sell fitness gear, layer in “health & fitness” interests. This narrows the pool to people who both look like your customers and have demonstrated relevant interests.
  • Age & Gender: If you know your core customer is women aged 25-40, set that parameter. Don’t waste budget showing ads to teenagers if your product isn’t for them.
  • Exclude Existing Customers: Always exclude your current customer list from any Lookalike campaign. Otherwise, you risk showing ads to people who already bought from you, wasting ad spend and annoying loyal customers.

Step 4: Test, Refresh, and Scale

Lookalike Audiences are not “set it and forget it.” They require ongoing management to remain effective.

  1. Test Multiple Sizes Simultaneously: Create at least three Lookalikes-for example, 1%, 3%, and 5%-with the same source. Run them in separate ad groups with identical creative and budget. After a week or two, you’ll see which size delivers the best cost-per-acquisition (CPA) for your goals.
  2. Refresh Your Source Every 30 Days: User behavior changes, and your source data can become stale. Re-upload your latest customer list or re-create your website event source monthly to keep the Lookalike model trained on current, high-intent users.
  3. Scale by Duplicating Winning Combos: Once you identify a Lookalike size and creative that works, duplicate that ad set and increase the budget gradually (no more than 20% per day) to avoid shocking TikTok’s delivery system.

The Big Picture: Lookalikes as a Prospecting Engine

From our experience, TikTok Lookalike Audiences perform best when used to find new customers at the top of the funnel, rather than for retargeting. They should be part of a broader strategy that includes testing creative rapidly, since the platform rewards novelty. A strong Lookalike paired with fresh, engaging creative is a powerful combination. And remember: the best source audience is one you continuously refine. The better you understand who your actual repeat customers are-and the more data you feed into TikTok-the more accurate and profitable your Lookalike Audiences will become.
