Smarter Bing Ads Benchmarks

Bing (Microsoft Advertising) benchmarking usually gets reduced to a couple of lazy takeaways: “CPCs are cheaper than Google” and “volume is smaller.” Sometimes that’s true. But it’s also how teams end up making the wrong call-either starving Bing when it’s a quiet profit center or scaling it in ways that look good in-platform and disappoint everywhere else.

The better approach is to benchmark Bing for what it actually is: a different demand environment with a different mix of intent, device behavior, and conversion timing. If you want clean, defensible benchmarks, you need to stop comparing channel averages and start comparing what kind of intent you’re buying and where the next marginal dollar should go.

Why “same keyword” doesn’t mean “same intent” on Bing

The most common benchmarking mistake is assuming a keyword carries the same meaning across platforms. On Bing, user context often shifts the intent behind the exact same query.

Three forces shape Bing traffic in ways that don’t show up in a generic CPC or CPA benchmark:

  • Default search settings (Windows devices, Edge defaults, corporate IT setups)
  • Desktop-heavy sessions (longer research posture, different conversion paths)
  • Microsoft identity signals (work accounts and enterprise usage patterns)

That combination can produce two very different realities in the same account: genuinely high-intent desktop research that converts well over time, and “captive” clicks from users who didn’t actively choose Bing. Blended benchmarks hide which one you’re paying for.

The benchmark most teams should use: Intent Mix

If you want a benchmark that actually helps you manage and scale, focus on Intent Mix: how your spend is distributed across different levels of commercial intent-and how performance behaves inside each bucket.

Step 1: Classify search terms into four intent buckets

Pull your search term report and sort queries into these categories:

  1. Explicit Brand (your brand name, product names, navigational queries)
  2. High-Intent Category (buy, pricing, quote, demo, near me)
  3. Ambiguous Research (best, reviews, compare, top)
  4. Competitor & Substitution (competitor names, alternative to, vs)

Step 2: Benchmark within each bucket (not just blended)

Within each bucket, benchmark the numbers that actually drive decisions:

  • CPA / ROAS
  • Conversion rate (CVR)
  • Click-through rate (CTR)
  • Impression share and top-of-page rate (to understand competitiveness and visibility)

This is where the truth usually shows up. Bing can look “amazing” simply because it’s over-indexing on Brand and high-intent queries. Or it can look “fine” while quietly spending too much in research terms that need a longer runway (or a different landing experience) to pay back.

Step 3: Benchmark the mix itself

This is the part most teams never do: measure your spend share by bucket. A channel isn’t just its CPA-it’s what it’s made of.

Ask:

  • What percentage of Bing spend is Brand vs Category vs Research vs Competitor?
  • Is performance being propped up by bottom-funnel capture?
  • Are you allocating enough to high-intent category terms to learn and scale?

The underused KPI: Query-to-Value Lag

Bing often gets judged on windows that are too short to be fair-especially in B2B, high-ticket purchases, and any category where trust and comparison matter.

Instead of treating a 7-day snapshot as the verdict, benchmark how long it takes Bing-driven users to become valuable.

What to measure

  • 7/30/60-day conversion curves (or longer if your sales cycle demands it)
  • For lead gen: Lead → SQL, SQL → Opportunity, Opportunity → Close
  • Assisted conversions (how often Bing starts or influences a journey even if it doesn’t “close” it)

It’s not unusual for Bing to look average in a short window and strong once the pipeline has time to mature. If you only benchmark immediate CPA, you’ll cut future revenue because the reporting made it easy to do so.

A better comparison: Bing vs Google’s marginal spend

Here’s a more useful way to think about benchmarking: you’re rarely choosing “Bing or Google” in the abstract. You’re choosing where the next incremental dollar should go.

As Google budgets rise, incremental spend tends to push into more expensive and less efficient territory-broader matching, tougher auctions, and more marginal queries. Bing often competes against that “last mile” of Google spend, not against Google’s blended average.

How to benchmark it in real life

  • Identify the last $X of spend on Google (often where CPA rises as you scale)
  • Compare Bing’s CPA/ROAS to that marginal layer, not your overall Google account average

This reframes Bing from a side channel into a strategic budget lever. The question becomes: “Is Bing more efficient than the next dollar we’d spend elsewhere?”

Don’t confuse cheap clicks with efficient attention

Lower CPC doesn’t automatically mean better performance. Bing’s search results pages can behave differently-layout, ad density, shopping units, and how aggressively other advertisers bid for top placements all matter.

To avoid benchmarking yourself into a false sense of security, add a simple “attention layer” to your analysis:

  • Absolute top-of-page rate
  • Top-of-page rate
  • CTR by position cohort (if available via reporting or segmentation)
  • Impression share lost to rank

If you’re “saving money” but sliding into low-attention positions, your benchmarks will look fine while your growth stalls. The reverse is also true: if Bing is giving you more top placement at lower CPC, it can outperform even with lower volume.

Pattern benchmarks: when Bing tends to win

Instead of relying on generic industry averages, benchmark Bing against the performance pattern you’re likely operating in.

Bing often outperforms when

  • Brand protection is important (strong branded efficiency)
  • Your conversion path is desktop-friendly (forms, configurators, longer pages)
  • You’re in B2B or enterprise-adjacent categories
  • Your strategy includes retargeting tied to high-intent search behavior

Bing often underperforms when

  • The category is mobile-first and impulse-driven
  • Growth depends more on social discovery than search capture
  • “Captive traffic” is inflating clicks without meaningful engagement or downstream value

A weekly benchmarking scorecard you can actually run

If you want something operational (not just theoretical), track this weekly:

  1. Intent Mix % (spend share across the four buckets)
  2. CPA/ROAS by bucket
  3. Lag curve (7/30/60-day outcomes or pipeline progression)
  4. Bing vs Google marginal CPA/ROAS (allocation decision metric)
  5. Attention proxies (abs top %, top %, CTR)
  6. Incrementality check when possible (geo split, time split, or a simple holdout)

That scorecard turns “benchmarking” into what it should be: a way to make smarter allocation decisions, faster.

The goal of benchmarking Bing isn’t to prove it’s cheaper than Google. The goal is to understand whether Bing delivers a different intent mix and a different payback curve-and whether that improves your marginal economics as you scale.

If you benchmark Bing like it’s a smaller Google, you’ll keep making the same two mistakes: underfunding it when it’s working, or scaling it in the wrong pockets when it isn’t. Benchmark it by intent, lag, and marginal efficiency-and it becomes a channel you can actually manage with confidence.
